Sprint, Nextel merger will not hurt NASCAR racing series.

Dec. 16--NASCAR officials say the planned Sprint-Nextel merger won't hurt America's premier stock-car racing series.

In fact, NASCAR chairman and chief executive Brian France said the merger of Nextel, title sponsor of NASCAR's top series, with Sprint could prove to be a bonus. France said the merger could give NASCAR a sponsor with even more resources and customers.

In the short term, the merger will not result in a name change for the Nextel Cup Series. That's because the Sprint-Nextel accord, even if it sails through shareholder approval and the regulatory process, isn't expected to be final until the second half of 2005.
