Dec. 18--A.M. Best Co. raised financial strength ratings on eight CIGNA HMOs and affirmed ratings on others Friday, citing improved health care earnings and service levels.
Oldwick, N.J.-based Best affirmed an A- (excellent) rating for CIGNA HealthCare of Connecticut Inc. The agency's upgrades from B (very good) to A- affect CIGNA's HMOs in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, and some other states.
The outlook on all the ratings is "stable." But Best cautioned that competitive pressure could challenge CIGNA's goal to grow membership in 2005 and 2006, and any special charges could stall the company's turnaround.
