Connecticut thinks huge Pfizer work force safe, despite Celebrex woes.

Dec. 18--Despite the cloud cast over Pfizer Inc.'s painkiller Celebrex Friday, officials in southeastern Connecticut are confident the pharmaceutical giant will continue to boost their local economy.

No one was worried that new evidence of cardiovascular side effects from the drug would prompt cuts in the workforce of about 6,500 at Pfizer's research and development campuses in Groton and New London.

"Pfizer is a tremendous, well-run company," said New London city manager Richard Brown. "With the Groton-New London operations, they're involved in research, so [questions about Celebrex's safety] may bring some additional activity here."
