Banning, Calif., officials seeks free-trade zone status.

Dec. 18--Banning officials would like to extend the reach of international importing and exporting to the Pass city of some 27,000 people.

The City Council this week voted to spend $10,000 to apply for the designation as a free -- trade zone.

If the city is successful, it could use this designation to attract new manufacturing and shipping operations to the city, said Henry Hesling, interim economic development director.

Free -- trade zones, also known as foreign -- trade zones, are areas within the United States that are considered out of the reach of the U.S. Customs Service.
