General Electric Sued over Deceptive Insurance Practices; Lawsuit Draws Attention to the Need to Define 'Assisted Living' in New York

NEW YORK, Nov. 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- AARP announced that it has filed a request with the New York State Supreme Court (Queens County) to join as co-counsel for the plaintiffs with the law firm Vollmer & Tanck, LLP, located in Jericho, New York, in a class action lawsuit filed against General Electric Assurance Company (GE). The suit claims GE engages in misleading and deceptive business practices when selling their long term care insurance policies that cover assisted living expenses.
The plaintiff, Elbert H. Van Houten, purchased a long-term care insurance policy from GE, with a clause for coverage in alternate long-term facilities. The policy stated that it would provide coverage for such facilities if they were "licensed by the appropriate licensing agency (if any)..."...
