One of the most unappealing jobs in investment banking at the moment is that of a mergers and acquisitions banker in the technology sector. D eals are harder to come by, smaller and tougher to arrange than they were last year.
Osman Mardin, head of European M&A at Robertson Stephens, has the unenviable task of trying to build up an M&A team focused almost entirely on the technology sector at a time when the markets show little immediate hope of rising out of the downward spiral.
So far this year Mardin and his team have advised on five M&A deals, three of which have been transatlantic.
Four were in the technology sector and one was for a biotechnology firm. The real coup, says Mardin, was advising Infineon, the German semiconductor company...
