John Mack's appointment as chief executive officer of CSFB is a real coup for the Swiss-owned investment bank, and it is no surprise that staff are generally delighted with the appointment.

Mack is one of the best chief executives around on Wall Street. It's true that he's now 56 years old, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and most people in his position would be thinking of spending a bit more time on the golf course. But judging by the fierce struggle that preceded his ousting from Morgan Stanley, Mack has lost none of the ambition, aggression or competitive drive that sustains those at the top of the investment banking world.
