Dennis Holt, the new chief executive of Axa UK, plans to examine closer ties between the insurer and UK banks after being poached from his position of head of retail banking at Lloyds TSB.

Axa UK has hired Holt as group chief executive and he will join Axa's executive committee. The post has been vacant since February when Mark Wood left to head the European activities of Prudential, the UK life assurer.

The move is widely seen as a step up the career ladder for Holt, who has been in charge of retail banking at Lloyds since February last year, and has been with the bank for more than 30 years. Holt denied that his decision to leave Lloyds was influenced by the failure of its bid to buy Abbey National....
