When SunGard, the global software firm, completes its acquisition of Guardian IT this July, it will be the largest provider of disaster recovery and backup information services in Europe. Having had little experience in the business until last year, the company will now deal with one of the most important considerations that businesses in Europe face. Since September 11, disaster recovery has been near the top of the list of priorities. Executives at Guardian IT thought the company was well positioned to benefit from the renewed interest, but it had also invested heavily in technology to support web-based businesses which ultimately could no longer pay their bills.
