EC wants action on auditor independence.

The European Commission (EC) has issued recommendations on auditor independence as the reverberations from the collapse of Enron continue to echo in Europe. The EC's recommendations have few implications for the UK, which already has well-established practices for safeguarding auditor independence. But continental European companies and audit firms will have to make significant changes in many areas.

Henri Olivier, secretary general of the Federation des Experts Comptables Europeens (FEE), the representative organisation for the accountancy profession in Europe, says the EC's recommendations constitute 'a very important document'.
