Which investment bank is heading for its second best year ever in 2002, at a time when equity markets seem to be hurtling towards the precipice and the mood in the industry has rarely been gloomier?The answer: UBS Warburg. Of course, all bets could be off if there were a cataclysmic collapse in equity markets, but I can't see that happening. In the meantime, UBS Warburg has been successfully navigating its way through the corporate wreckage that litters the shoreline such as Marconi, Enron and WorldCom; its fixed income and rates business is having another excellent year; and it has been doing better than many others in the tough conditions in equities and advisory businesses.
