The announced departure of Richard "Dicky" Dale, from Schroder Salomon Smith Barney last week may have come as a surprise to his colleagues - but not to close watchers of his career. Dale and his co-head of equity research, Mike Crawshaw, said they were leaving the industry to spend more time with their families - Crawshaw's wife, in fact, was due to have her fourth child on Friday.To those in the know, however, Dale's announcement must have seemed almost inevitable after Neil Blackley, Merrill Lynch's star media analyst, announced earlier in the week that he was leaving the industry to join his family at his house in Barbados for a while.

Apparently Dale and Blackley have had parallel careers. The two worked at James Capel together from 1984 to 1990 - when...
