InverCaixa enters European rankings.

InverCaixa, the investment banking arm of Catalan savings bank La Caixa, has found itself among the top four M&A advisers in Europe after its parent played an important role in a [euro]15bn ($16bn) deal.The investment bank's part in putting together Gas Natural's offer for Iberdrola, the Spanish energy group, shot it to fourth place for 2003 in Thomson Financial's European league table.

The firm is unlikely to retain the position as more deals are announced, but to even find it in the top 50 is a surprise.

InverCaixa last year finished 53rd in Europe, after working on nine deals worth a combined $1.5bn ([euro]1.4bn), according to Thomson.

In 2001 it was 88th, having advised on one deal worth $369m. Before 2001...
