Ethan Berman, chief executive of RiskMetrics, a provider of risk measurement solutions, is no ordinary financial technology executive. He holds a degree in theatre and psychology and originally intended to pursue a career as a playwright.Then the financial services world called and he went to work briefly for JP Morgan before making one more attempt to work in his chosen field. When an operations problem arose at JP Morgan's Tokyo office, the bank asked Berman to abandon his plays and solve it. He started trading bonds in Tokyo and was made managing director in New York four years later.

Berman became manager of JP Morgan's risk management services group, where he led its spin-off into the RiskMetrics Group in 1988.
