Morningstar launches hedge fund knowledge base.

Morningstar, the global investment research firm, has become the latest to launch a hedge fund database in response to growing calls for greater transparency of the $725bn ([euro]575bn) industry.Morningstar joins firms such as CSFB/Tremont, MSCI and FTSE, which are seeking to provide greater information and understanding of the hedge fund market to existing and potential investors.

Conservative investors including pension funds and insurance companies are finding hedge funds an increasingly attractive way of diversifying portfolios. More readily available information on funds and their performance is forecast to increase their exposure.
