`Resolve conflict between free trade, labor standards', BUSINESS TIMES

Business Times (Malaysia) 06-08-2000 THE World Trade Organization (WTO) should resolve the conflict between trade liberalization and core labor standards, and move towards promoting job creation and safeguarding workers' rights, Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) said. Speaking to delegates at the 88th International Labor Conference in Geneva yesterday, MTUC president Senator Zainal Rampak said the matter is important in view of the low ratification rate of International Labor Organization (ILO) conventions.

He urged the WTO to produce statistical evidence to determine how many member states have ratified and implemented core labor standards pursuant to the WTO Declaration, signed in Singapore four years ago. Zainal said the demonstrations...
