Big boys are beefing up Malaysian operations, BUSINESS TIMES

Business Times (Malaysia) 07-04-2000 EVEN as Malaysia's home-grown automotive industry gets a two-year reprieve from head-to-head competition with foreign carmakers under Asian Free Trade Area (Afta) rules, the big boys are beefing up Malaysian operations. Malaysia has requested, and received, approval from its Afta partners to defer opening up of its automotive sector to 2005 instead of 2003.
Ford Motor Co announced last week it was investing an additional RM22.5 million and raising its stake in its local assembler and distributor, Amim Holdings Sdn Bhd, to 49 per cent from its 30 per cent stake.
