Rising lay-offs in corporate America, BUSINESS TIMES

Business Times (Malaysia) 02-02-2001 NEW YORK, Thurs: The body count is increasing as more employers announced job cuts across America, the latest being by discount broker Charles Schwab. Schwab yesterday asked non-essential employees to take unpaid leave, an order which will affect about 15,000 of its employees.

Meanwhile, online retailer Amazon.com announced a 1,300 employee lay- off exercise yesterday, a day after car company DaimlerChrysler shocked the market with a 26,000 job-slash and temporary stoppage of several plants in North and South America. Copy machine company Xerox followed with an announcement to slash 4,000 workers. Others have made similar moves in recent weeks. Thousands more workers have lost their jobs in technology companies...
