Firms turn adversity to advantage amid slowdown, BUSINESS TIMES

Business Times (Malaysia) 05-17-2001 HISTORY repeats itself, even in business. Some companies are already putting their counterparts off guard during the economic slowdown, and hope to prevail during an upturn to gain more market share and maintain an edge over their competitors. This is easy to do when most companies and investors are cautious and nervous during a slowdown, given the high risks and uncertainties.

The most recent example of a company turning adversity to its advantage is Star Publications (M) Bhd, which captured a substantial market share during the 1997 financial crisis that saw its daily circulation grow from 207,000 to about 270,000 currently.
