Business Times (Malaysia) 10-31-2001 THE slower business faced by major industries in the West, a slump in air travel, and no signs of the weather turning particularly inclement in the winter ahead are threatening to cause an oil price slick that will sorely test the resolve and effectiveness of Opec in "regulating" the market. The cartel's 11 members, who had already agreed to cut production by one million barrels a day (bpd) on September 1, the third this year, are now working on a further reduction in supplies by between 750,000 and one million bpd; and the lobbying is not confined to its ranks too.
