Car spare parts grey imports may take a toll on profits, BUSINESS TIMES

Business Times (Malaysia) 07-01-2002 WHILE car companies are looking for income from the grey import area of spare parts, analysts say competing in this vastly untapped source may put pressure on profit margins. The market for spare parts is estimated to be worth some RM444 million and about half of it is dominated by parallel imports.
As parallel importers give consumers a choice to buy at cheaper prices, authorized dealers such as Auto Bavaria and DRB-Oriental-Honda Sdn Bhd are forced to use up resources to compete with their own products. "Grey imports are dangerous as they can exert tremendous pressure on profit margins of these authorized dealers," an analyst said.
