Tourism sector has potential to draw FDIs, BUSINESS TIMES

Business Times (Malaysia) 02-04-2003 THE tourism industry's role as a foreign exchange earner from tourists can be widened to include global foreign direct investment (FDI). MIDF Sisma Securities Sdn Bhd economist Azrul Azwar said a shift in Malaysia's focus to redirect global capital flows into the services sector may not be a bad idea.
"As a proxy to the services sector, the tourism industry has great potential as an FDI magnet," Azrul said. He said apart from full foreign ownership in a number of hotels and restaurants in Malaysia such as Mandarin Oriental, Novotel, Sofitel and Club Med Cherating, the Universal Studios project in Johor, estimated to be worth US$2.2 billion (US$1 = RM3.80), could turn out to be one of the biggest FDI flows into...
