`More uneven field for poor nations if Cancun round fails to deliver', BUSINESS TIMES

Business Times (Malaysia) 07-30-2003 DEVELOPING countries may face a more uneven playing field in international trade if the World Trade Organization (WTO) Fifth Ministerial Meeting in Cancun, Mexico, delivers little or no progress. With countries remaining at loggerheads a little over a month before the next round starts, odds of the Cancun meet ending in disarray are increasing. If this happens, the multilateral WTO could quickly lose its importance as countries turn to bilateral and regional free-trade arrangements (FTAs), said Commonwealth Business Council (CBC) director of trade policy Dr Razeen Sally.
But developing countries could find it harder to get a stronger voice if bilateral arrangements take centre stage in world trade, he added. ...
