US, S'pore visa curbs on Muslim seafarers slammed, BUSINESS TIMES

Business Times (Malaysia) 11-03-2003 BRUSHING aside opinions and views from the global shipping industry, the European Commission (EC) has unilaterally proceeded to enforce its controversial law which bans the entry of single-hull oil tankers from European ports. The move was severely criticised by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) which said the EC action was disturbing as it would lead to negative repercussions on the shipping industry.
In a strongly-worded statement, IMO secretary general William O'Neil said it was imperative that safety, security and environmental standards be established on the basis that they would be applied globally.
