Blues Exec: Benefit Mandates Curb Affordability

More Florida residents could afford health insurance if unnecessary state laws which mandate health benefits were eliminated, according to a Florida Blue Cross executive.

"Mandates hurt small companies that can least afford health insurance," said Tom Albright, senior vice president and chief marketing executive for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, headquartered in Jacksonville.

"And it's been shown that mandates result in more providers administering more services at higher cost," he told a state task force in Jacksonville recently.
