Five years ago London-based Prudential Corp. PLC broke takeover records when it paid $608 million for Jackson National Life Insurance Co.

The 1986 buyout of Jackson National marked the biggest British invasion of the United States since the Beatles, and was at the time one of the largest foreign purchases of a U.S. firm ever recorded.

Prudential wanted to expand their considerable business empire to include the United States, one of the only markets in which they were not yet represented.
