IRS Slaps $643 Million Tax Liability on Executive Life

Even as California regulators received court permission to resume some payments to Executive Life Ins. Co. policyholders and annuitants, an Internal Revenue Service demand for $643 million threatened efforts to rescue the insurer.

California Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi promised to "do everything in my power to stop this IRS raid on the assets needed to pay Executive Life policyholders."

In another development, the New York Insurance Department was granted a permanent order of rehabilitation for Executive Life Ins. Co. of New York on April 23.
