Indemnity Downcycles Getting Deeper/Longer

For many indemnity insurers, the underwriting cycle is looking more like a "death spiral," according to Roy Winkles, a vice president of international management consultants at Temple, Barker & Sloane/Strategic Planning Associates and co-author of a new study on the accident and health insurance industry.

The survey, based on A.M. Best data published late last year, analyzed the performance of 67 insurers accounting for more than 60 percent of total industry premiums.

Companies participating in the survey ranged in size from Prudential Ins. Co. to the Central Life Assurance Co. of Iowa, a medium-sized insurer based in Des Moines.
