JAMA study: large medical plans get low marks. (Journal of the American Medical Association)

The Aug 18, 1993 issue of JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association reports the results of a survey of patients using managed care. The survey asked patients of solo or single specialty (SOLO), multispecialty group (MSG) or health maintenance organizations (HMOs) with fee-for-services or prepaid physician plans to rate the quality of their care. The survey reveals that 64% of SOLO patients rated their care as excellent overall, while only 49% of HMO patients and 48% of MSG patients rates their care as excellent overall. The survey results indicate that patients have difficulty accessing services in large medical organizations.
