Consumer Protection 'Double Standard' Hit.(Health Insurance Association of America and Association of Private Pension and Welfare Plans)

Two major organizations engaged in the managed care reform debate joined together last week to blast the "double standard" they see in the "so-called consumer protection" legislation being considered by Congress.

Leaders of the Health Insurance Association of America and the Association of Private Pension and Welfare Plans (APPWP-the Benefits Association) argued that private health plans would be subject to costly, legally enforceable rights, regulations and remedies while federal health programs and employees would be exempt.

"Once again, Congress is telling the private sector, 'Do as I say, not as I do,"' said HIAA President Bill Gradison, "Clearly, Congress has one set of rules for private health plans and another set for its own health plans"...
