EU Privacy Standards Concern Insurers.

A wide array of insurance groups representing virtually every segment of the United States insurance industry is asking the Commerce Department to clarify that federal, state and local consumer protection laws in the U.S. satisfy privacy standards recently issued by the European Union.

The issue involves a directive by the EU requiring all nations involved in commerce with EU members to follow certain privacy standards.

In addition, the directive contains a safe harbor that allows industries subject to strong privacy regulation in their own countries to continue data exchanges with EU members.
