Prudential has invited some 250 "guests" to an exclusive New Year's Eve affair at its Operations Control Center (OCC) in Roseland, N.J., but the atmosphere will be less than festive as the company's information technology staff gathers to take care of serious business--making sure the company's systems worldwide weather the Y2K storm.
While there will be food and nonalcoholic bubbly on hand to remind them of the time of year, the IS workers' attention will be glued to multiple monitors that will follow the company's thorough testing of systems and applications for Year 2000-related problems. No one will be celebrating until the systems go back online in the early morning of Jan. 1, 2000 with no major problems reported.
