XML `War And Peace'.(usage of XML language)

With all due apologies to Tolstoy and his great epic, in this article we will explore the various "wars" (a k a squabbles and skirmishes) that have broken out surrounding XML and its applications in the insurance industry, and also some of the "peaceful" resolutions that have developed recently.

In my job as a standards evangelist for ACORD, I am often asked to explain the politics beyond these competing initiatives and to offer my opinion as to which will prevail in the end.

When XML was adopted just three years ago as a formal "Recommendation" by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), it was hailed as the "next big thing" to develop since the Internet and HTML.
