RUSSIA TAKES ISSUE WITH GEORGIA'S THREAT TO BLOCK WTO MEMBERSHIP

TX Deputy Economic Development and Trade Minister Maksim Medvedkov on 21 August characterized as "counterproductive" Georgian officials' hints the previous day that Tbilisi might block Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Caucasus Press reported. Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze and Foreign Minister Irakli Menagharishvili both warned that Georgia might do so unless Russia modifies its position with regard to the breakaway unrecognized Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
