CONCERN OVER ATTEMPTS AT INTERNET CONTROL.

The Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (RSF) expressed concern on 28 October over attempts by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Ukrainian secret police, to assume control of the country's Internet operations and to intercept e-mail messages. On 22 July, a private company, Hostmaster, was taken to court by the Ukrainian government over the ".ua" domain name.

The government has asked the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the body in charge of assigning country domain names, to approve the proposed transfer, but has not yet received a response.
