UNIONS SEEK CONTINGENCY PLAN FOR GARMENT WORKERS
Info-Prod Research (Middle East), January, 2007
According to "Bahrain Tribune", trade union heads have called upon the Ministry of Labor to plan contingency measures to help around 1,000 garment factory workers who could be retrenched with the impending closure of a major factory in Maameer very soon. Representatives from the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions (GFBTU) and the Ministry of Labor had set a meeting to discuss the plight of the workers.
GFBTU coordinator for garment factory workers Mohammed Ali Maki told the Tribune that the closure of garment factory is imminent. A total 430 of the workers are Bahraini women. Maki said that the garment sector is far from stable since it was hit by a crisis in early 2005.
