AsiaInfo Services 07-11-1996 Siemens Starts New Fiber Optic Cable Company CHENGDU, July 11, AsiaInfo Services, Inc -- Siemens AG announced here yesterday that after over a year of trial operations, Siemens Fiber Optic Cables Ltd Chengdu is ready to start mass production. China is expected to invest 500 billion yuan (US$ 60.24 billion) in the telecommunications sector in order to open an additional 150 million telephone lines in the Ninth Five-year Plan (1996-2000) period. To meet this goal, at least 100,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable will have to be installed, he said.
