AsiaInfo Services 09-14-2001 China Unicom's Interim Profit Soars BEIJING, Sep 14, 2001 (AsiaPort via COMTEX) -- China Unicom Ltd, China's second biggest mobile-phone company said on Wednesday its first half net profit surged nearly twelvefold to a record 2.19 billion yuan (US$280 million) due to rapid growth in subscribers. China Unicom's net profit in the six months to June is compared with 171 million yuan in the same period last year. The firm, which was listed in June last year in Hong Kong and New York, said sales rose 29.6 per cent to 13.62 billion yuan from 10.5 billion yuan. At the end of June, total cellular subscribers reached 20.20 million, up 58.2 per cent from the end of 2000, the company said, adding that its market share in the areas it serves...
