AsiaInfo Services 06-19-2002 China Unicom Would Launch New Paging Business CHINA, Jun 19, 2002 (AsiaPort via COMTEX) -- lately, China Unicom unveiled that it would launch new paging business -- "Unicom New Message", which was based on 198/199 nationwide high speed paging network to transmit various professional messages and customer messages including stock, sports and others.
The new type pager had the same volume with traditional beeper. China Unicom has said its paging business is eroding as customers switch to mobile phones. In 2001, the carrier's paging subscribers fell to 32.9 million from 44.5 million. The experts expected the paging unit will post an operating loss of 136 million yuan.
