AsiaInfo Services 08-20-2002 China Unicom pushes ahead with paging business CHINA, Aug 20, 2002 (AsiaPort via COMTEX) -- China Unicom Co. has expanded its share in China's paging market by acquiring China Motion Telecom Co.'s call centers nationwide, it is the sixth paging company it has acquired this year. China Unicom has gained 500,000 paging customers from China Motion.
With 289 million users nationwide, the company takes 70 percent of China's paging market. In Beijing, the company has started to transfer China Motion users. "We will have some 40,000 China Motion users in Beijing to transfer to our network in 40 days," said Zhang Zechao, general manager of Beijing Unicom's paging division.
