AsiaInfo Services 01-09-2006 China Unicom Finishes Part of GSM/GPRS Network Upgrade BEIJING, Jan 09, 2006 (SinoCast via COMTEX) -- China Unicom, the country's second-largest mobile carrier, said it had finished updating GSM/GPRS networks in four big cities in 2005, including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. The upgraded network is expected to be put into commercial operation formally in the first quarter of this year, according to China Unicom Shanghai branch. The upgrade is expected to spread in other regions, especially economically fast-growing regions, part of the company's efforts to expand its digital business.

The investment is estimated to be CNY 18 billion, said an insider. The telecom carrier plans to invest about 5% its total earnings...
