AsiaInfo Services 01-08-2007 SMIC to Rival Taiwan Peers with 0.18-micron Wafer Technology BEIJING, Jan 08, 2007 (SinoCast via COMTEX) -- Shanghai-based Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) got jitters as the Taiwan authority has recently permitted companies to use 8-inch and 0.18-micron wafer production technologies in their China mainland businesses. The third-quarter results by SMIC indicate 0.18-micron products made up as much as 72.5 percent of its production.

The company will have to meet stiff challenges if peers from Taiwan vend products at competitive prices. Spokesperson for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company said the company wants to show its advantages in service, but product prices will vary from those in the past....
