AsiaInfo Services 05-22-2007 China Unicom Starts GPRS on May 18 BEIJING, May 22, 2007 (SinoCast via COMTEX) -- China Unicom, the nation's second largest mobile telecom carrier, announced that it starts providing GPRS (general packet radio service) via the existing Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network on May 18. Earlier, China Unicom was left behind by China Mobile, the world's largest mobile communications services provider by market value, for lacking of GPRS. In 2006, China Unicom invested over CNY 12.4 billion in enlarging the GSM network capacity and upgrading the GSM network in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen to 2.5G network, enabling the mobile phone users to access to the Internet wirelessly and enjoy GPRS to deal data business. ...
