Peru: Telefonica invests in infrastructure.

Telefonica del Peru scheduled for 1999 investments of US$400mil to develop basic and cellular telephone services, data communications, and infrastructure. The company expects for 1998 a 16% growth in the number of fixed telephone service customers to 1.8mil. The cellular mobile subscribtion is to increase by 58%. Meanwhile, the subsidiary Telefonica Servicios de Internet plans to introduce access to the WWW through TV sets. The company eyes the fast growing number of users to reach 1mil by year 2002, creating a solid basis for the electronic trade. There are currently 60,000 users to reach 120,000 by end 1999, with a growth rate of 10% per month. There are around 50 Internet providers in Lima.
