Brazil: Competition in the Internet portals.

Yahoo, America Online, and Microsoft are increasing competition to win the Internet portals market, gaining access to 2.2mil users in Brazil, that generate R$400mil only with WWW access services. Yahoo already set up an office at Sao Paulo from where it will base its penetration strategy in Latin America. American Online, through the joint venture AOL Latin America, is following the same path and is to set up an office over the next weeks. The company plans to invest US$100mil to develop operations in Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina. Microsoft launched the Brazilian version of its MSN portal jumping ahead from competitors, and will start in June to sell banners and advertising against it.
