Brazil: Telecom Italia keeps planning.

The announced merger of Telecom Italia and Deutsche Telekom is not to have consequences in the Brazilian assets of TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile), that has several cellular mobile operations throughout the country. In 1999 TIM plans to invest R$800mil - R$900mil to develop operations that include in Band A Tele Celular Sul, Tele Nordeste Celular where it has majority stakes, while it also has 43% in the Band B operator Maxitel. Resources will go to implement digital technology in the network of Nordeste Celular (61,000 subscribers) and Celular Sul (603,000 subscribers) that have 70% of lines with digital technology a percent to reach 100% by year 2000. TIM wants to consolidate leadership of these operators until end 1999, when it is to reach 1mil subscribers...
