Overview on the Brazilian noncellulosic fibers market.

Unifi's Brazilian subsidiary - Unifi do Brasil - acquired last month 2 plants in Brazil from Hoechst, which had broken up its joint venture with Rhodia last December. Located in Alfenas, State of Minas Gerais and Jacarei, State of Sao Paulo, the plants produce polyester fibres. Hoechst's plants located in Santo Andre and Osasco (Sao Paulo) were sold to Ledervin of Brazil. The national nylon and polyester fibers market is disputed by Rhodia Poliamida, DuPont, Fibra DuPont, Polienka, Fibra, Ledervin and Unifi do Brasil. Rhodia now focuses on the nylon business through Rhodia Poliamida, which started operating last month. The Brazilian synthetic fibers market is worth between US$1.2bil and US$1.3bil per year.
