Brazil: Y2K bug boost computer sales.

Brazilian hardware producers report growing sales of PC as consequence of the Y2K bug, that is leading to a renewal in the installed basis ofcomputers. For instance LG, a producer of monitors, expects a 25% increase on sales in 1999. Compaq says that sales also increased as privatized telecom companies are being modernized. In 1998 Compaq had a R$713mil income from sales of 295,000 PCs of which 142,000 desktop machines, while it is investing US$20mil in 1999. Itautec reports a 17% growth in the first half (Jan - June) PC sales and expects to end 1999 with a 10% growth thanks to corporate contracts, compared with the 85, 600 units sold in the period.
