Brazil: Embratel made mistake in Intelsat quota.

Mr. Dilio Penedo, chairman of the long distance carrier Embratel, admitted the company incurred in a mistake by not firming its position in the Intelsat satellites consortium from 2,105 to 4,87%, in a movethat led to a fine of R$2.8mil imposed to if by the telecoms agency Anatel. Mr. Penedo said the company was not willing to expend US$88mil to buy shares in the consortium, that would not change the representation status of Brazil into it. the increase on quota was due to the booming demand for backbones from Internet service providers. Internet is a priority market for Embratel, that is investing US$100mil to improve its access in 1999, and claims to have 80% of the Brazilian WWW traffic.
