Brazil: Portugal Telecom forbade by Anatel to control CRT.

South American Business Information, November, 1999

The Brazilian national telecoms company Anatel has made a decision about the control of the Rio Grande do Sul-based telecoms operator CRT. According to Anatel, only one of the following companies will be allowed to acquire a 52% stake in CRT: TCS, CTBC Telecom or Sercomtel. Telefonica, which controls CRT, aimed to transfer its 52% stake toPortugal Telecom, but Anatel has not authorized the deal. The TCS holding, the main candidate, already holds 8% in CRT and its goal is to grow the business in Rio Grande do Sul - the holding presently operates only in the city of Pelotas through the CTMR subsidiary. CTBC Telecom operates in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, while Sercomtel operates in the city of Londrina (State of Parana).
